Have you heard of sponge candy? I honestly wasn’t quite sure what it was until seeing it here at The Candy Store. Think honeycomb covered in chocolate. Think Violet Crumble (which we carry). Think Crunchie, for those familiar with candies from the UK, which we also carry. Our sponge candy, which gets so many excited, is by an East Coast confectioner.

Located in Buffalo, NY, Parkside Candy has been in existence since 1927. They are famous for their sponge candy. Anyone from the Buffalo area who comes into our store does a little jump for joy when they see the familiar brown and gold box. They are always pleasantly surprised that we carry it. In fact, you’ll have a tough time finding it anywhere else on the West Coast.

The candy itself is a combination of crunchy, airy and chewy. Each piece is made up of a honeycomb center and an outer dark chocolate layer that is just the right thickness, providing the perfect balance. Yum!

If you’re thinking of gifts for the holidays, this one pound box may be just the thing you’re looking for. Perfect for a gift to take to the office or that upcoming dinner party, or maybe for your pal who hails from Buffalo. Stop by The Candy Store today to pick up your box.

– Liana

A good friend of the store invited us to be a part of a trunk show at her house this week. All of the vendors donated a part of their proceeds to Raphael House - established in 1971, the first shelter in San Francisco for homeless families. A few days before Halloween, I had the great pleasure of meeting some of the children who live at Raphael House, when they took an after-school field trip to the store. I was told afterwards that it made the kids’ day - mine as well. I’m honored to have been part of such wonderful events.

With over 300 trick-or-treaters stopping by, the event was a huge success. There were so many great costumes, it was extremely difficult to judge our first-ever costume contest. But at the end of the day, there could only be three winners, and here they are:

First place winner, Peter, pandered shamelessly to the judges, not only dressing as candy, but singing the entire Oompa Loompa song from Willy Wonka. Shameless pandering is rewarded highly at The Candy Store. Remember that next year, kids! Peter won a filled gumball machine.

Second place winner, Tyler, impressed us with his realistic rendition of a racecar driver. Ricky Bobby would be proud. Tyler walked away with his own candy bin filled with gummi bears.

Third place winner, Alexandra, was, well, just too cute in her ladybug costume - we had no choice but to present her with a $5 gift certificate to the store.

At The Candy Store, we love this time of the year because, well…candy is king! The season officially began with the highly anticipated arrival of the new crop of candy corn (we celebrated by using 30 lbs of it to decorate our front window!) We’ve also got some other new arrivals at the store to help get you in the Halloween spirit - think vampire bats, gummi brains, pumpkin malt balls and wax fangs.

As for the big day itself, if you want to be the coolest house on your block, you’ll want to hand out candy from our store. If you’re hosting a haunted house party, let us put together some fabulously freaky favors for your guests. And of course, the best party of all this Halloween is going to be right out in front of our store. Once again, we’re rolling out our fully stocked candy cart and will be giving away hundreds of pounds of candy to trick-or-treaters of all ages. If you missed it last year, don’t make the same mistake twice - stop by the store on the 31st from 3pm - 7pm. See you there!
